LaLiga referee’s response after being confronted by Barcelona boss Hansi Flick over wrongly disallowed offside goal comes to light

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

LaLiga referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez gave an interesting response regarding Barcelona’s wrongly disallowed goal on Sunday (November 10). La Blaugrana faced Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena in LaLiga and came into the game in inspired form.

Hansi Flick’s team thought they had taken the lead through Robert Lewandowski within the first 15 minutes. However, it was ruled out by VAR, as the Polish striker’s foot was deemed to be in an offside position.

Replays later showed that Lewandowski was behind defender Nayef Aguerd in the buildup to the goal. VAR officials mistook the Moroccan’s foot as Lewandowski’s and wrongly disallowed the goal.

Barcelona never recovered from that early setback. Meanwhile, the San Sebastian club took the lead through Sheraldo Becker in the 33rd minute and went on to win the game.

Despite the defeat, the Catalans remain at the top of the LaLiga table after 13 games. Barcelona have won 11 games and lost just twice in the league this season. They are six points ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid although Los Blancos have a game in hand.

When did Barcelona last win the league?

Xavi won the league in 2023

Barcelona last won the LaLiga title in the 2022-23 campaign, under Xavi. The Catalans finished the campaign with 88 points, ten more than Real Madrid in second place. Xavi’s men scored 70 goals and conceded just 20.

Robert Lewandowski, who had arrived at Camp Nou from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, was the club’s top scorer with 23 goals in the league and 33 in total. Unfortunately, Xavi failed to build on that impressive campaign.

Barcelona ended last season in second place in the league, ten points behind champions Real Madrid. Interestingly, the Catalans secured 85 points, scoring 79 goals and conceding 44 in the league.

Xavi was let go at the end of the season and Hansi Flick was appointed as his successor. That decision has already been vindicated, with the team firing on all cylinders under the German manager.

Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski have found a new lease of life under Flick, who has also helped Lamine Yamal continue his steady rise. The Blaugrana have scored 40 goals from 13 games in the league, conceding just 12.
