Texas – Just 30 minutes ago, actress Rebecca Gayheart confirmed heartbreaking news: her husband, actor Eric Dane – best known for playing “McSteamy” in the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy – has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a rare and currently incurable neurodegenerative disease. The announcement has shocked fans and the entertainment world alike.

Eric Dane and His Remarkable Career

Eric Dane is a familiar face in American television. He gained widespread fame for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy, a charming, talented, yet emotionally complex character. The family had kept the diagnosis private until today, when they decided to go public in an effort to raise awareness and encourage support for ALS-related causes.

Following the announcement, an outpouring of love and encouragement flooded in from fellow celebrities, friends, and fans. Ellen Pompeo, who played Meredith Grey – the best friend of Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy – posted on Instagram:

“Eric is strong, funny, and deeply kind. He always brought great energy to every set he worked on. I know he’ll face this with the same courage he’s shown throughout his life and career.”

ALS is a “nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,” according to the Mayo Clinic. 

It causes loss of muscle control as well as breathing and eating problems and can cause dementia. 

Patients typically live for three years after being diagnosed with the disease, but some can live for decades, according to the ALS Association. 

Others who have battled ALS include Stephen Hawking; Yankees player Lou Gehrig, who died in 1941; “SpongeBob SquarePants” creator Stephen Hillenburg; and Jon Stone, the creator “Sesame Street.”
