MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) – Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Angie Stone was killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Montgomery County early Saturday morning, her manager Deborah Champagne confirmed to WSFA 12 News. She was 63.
Champagne says Stone was leaving a performance and heading toward the CIAA basketball tournament in Baltimore when the crash happened.
Originally, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the crash happened just before 7 a.m., but has since corrected that the crash occurred at about 4:25 a.m.
ALEA has also confirmed eight others were injured in the crash and taken to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment.
The Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association says Stone delivered what would be her final performance at the 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball in Mobile on Friday night.
Interstate 65 was partially blocked in Montgomery County for hours due to the wreck, which involved a commercial vehicle.

The crash happened about 2 miles south of Hope Hull and blocked the left northbound lane and the left southbound lanes.
ALEA Troopers declared all lanes open and the scene clear at 11 a.m.
Nothing further about the crash is available at this time. ALEA Troopers continue investigate the incident.
Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed released a statement following the death of the renowned musician:
“Montgomery joins the music world in mourning the loss of Angie Stone, a trailblazer whose voice and artistry shaped generations. From her groundbreaking start with The Sequence to her soulful contributions to R&B and neo-soul, Ms. Stone’s impact on music and culture was undeniable.
“Her voice carried the weight of history, blending gospel roots with a modern sound that resonated across generations. Hits like Wish I Didn’t Miss You and Brotha weren’t just songs; they are anthems that speak to love, struggle, and resilience.
“We honor her legacy and send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and fans worldwide. Montgomery was proud to have hosted her talents, and her influence will live on in the music she gave us all.”
The Mobile Mardi Gras Association also released a statement about stone’s death:
“It is with deepest sympathy that we express our condolences to the Stone family during this difficult time. We were truly saddened to hear of Angie’s passing and our hearts go out to you all.
“Angie’s performance at the 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball was nothing short of phenomenal. Her talent captivated everyone in attendance, and her presence truly elevated the event. Never could we have imagined that it would be the last time we would have the honor of witnessing her perform. The news of her passing has left us all deeply saddened, and we will always cherish the memories of her incredible talent and warm spirit.
“During this time of bereavement, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with Angie’s family and loved ones. May you find comfort and strength in the loving memories you shared with her, and may her legacy continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.“
According to WIS 10, Angie Stone, whose full name is Angela Laverne Brown, was born in Columbia, South Carolina. She first began singing gospel music at First Nazareth Baptist Church, and formed the rap trio The Sequence at 16-years-old.

She released her first solo album in 1999 and it received gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards.
