Even after decades in Hollywood, Hugh Jackman still finds ways to surprise audiences — and apparently, even his own directors. In a recent interview, the 56-year-old Australian actor, best known for his iconic portrayal of Wolverine, shared a hilarious and slightly awkward story from the filming of Deadpool & Wolverine that has fans laughing non-stop.
According to Jackman, during one of the most intense scenes, director Shawn Levy wanted to make sure Wolverine’s muscles looked as dramatic and defined as possible under the studio lights. To achieve that superhero-level perfection, Levy reportedly shouted across the set, “Lubricate Hugh! Apply oil to make his skin shine!” The crew immediately rushed in with a mix of oils and sprays — but what came next was pure chaos.
“The problem,” Jackman laughed, “was that they didn’t realize how slippery that oil actually was. Within seconds, my whole costume started to slide, and my claws nearly flew out of my hands. Ryan [Reynolds] couldn’t stop laughing. It was supposed to be this dark, serious fight scene — but instead, we looked like two guys wrestling in a sauna!”
The story quickly spread online, with fans sharing memes of a “shiny Wolverine” glistening under the sun. Some even joked that Marvel should release a “director’s cut” showing the oily mishap in full glory. But behind the laughter, Jackman took the moment to reflect on the physical demands of returning to such a role at his age.
“Playing Wolverine again wasn’t easy,” he admitted. “I had to get back into insane shape. My training was brutal — weights, diet, recovery, everything. But moments like that remind me why I love filmmaking. It’s not just about being serious; it’s about the fun, the accidents, the humanity of it all.”
Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, later confirmed the story in his own sarcastic style, posting on social media: “For the record, I’ve never been that close to a Greek statue before. Hugh was literally glowing. If the oil budget was higher than my salary, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Director Shawn Levy also chimed in with humor, saying that “lubricate Hugh” became a running joke for the entire shoot. “Every time we were about to roll camera, someone on set would whisper, ‘Is Hugh lubricated?’ It turned into a ritual,” Levy joked. “But hey, the results looked incredible on screen.”
Despite the comedic chaos, Deadpool & Wolverine has been hailed as one of Marvel’s most anticipated crossovers, reuniting Jackman and Reynolds in their fan-favorite roles. The chemistry between the two stars — both on and off-screen — has been one of the movie’s biggest talking points, with their natural humor and friendship shining through in every interview.
As for Jackman, he insists that the experience reminded him why he keeps coming back to the role that made him a global icon. “After so many years, Wolverine still feels like a part of me,” he said. “Even when I’m covered in oil and slipping all over the place, it feels like home.”
The story might have started as a behind-the-scenes blooper, but it perfectly captures what fans love most about Hugh Jackman — his humility, his humor, and his ability to laugh at himself even in the most ridiculous situations.
And as one fan commented online: “Forget Deadpool vs. Wolverine — I’d pay good money to see the outtakes from that oil scene.”
In true Wolverine fashion, Jackman just smiled and teased, “Maybe one day. But next time, we’re switching to baby powder.”
