AFP journalists in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw said roads were buckled by the force of the tremors and pieces of ceilings fell from buildings.

CNN quoted a witness in Yangon city (Myanmar) saying that the earthquake came very quickly and strongly, as soon as they knew, everyone ran out of the building.

In the latest update, a major hospital in the Myanmar capital is a ‘mass casualty zone’ after the earthquake, AFP quoted officials as saying.

Social media posts from Mandalay showed collapsed buildings and debris strewn across the streets, but Reuters said it could not immediately verify the information.

Tremors in Bangkok, more than 1,000 km away

Hundreds of people poured out of buildings in the Thai capital Bangkok, more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the epicenter, Reuters reported. Witnesses in Bangkok said people ran into the streets in panic and water splashed from swimming pools.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said she postponed an official visit to the southern island of Phuket to hold an emergency meeting following the earthquake, according to a post on X.

Outside, workers carried medical kits to prepare to care for the elderly and those in shock.
